The Artist I recently checked out the latest CD from Italian singer/songwriter The Venetian entitled I Wanna Tell you a Story (2011). Though originally from Italy The Venetian (Guitar, Vocals) now resides in the Los Angeles area and is backed up by 2 other members: Luca Spanio (Bass), Kevin Witucky (Drums and Timpani).
The bandThe playing abilities of The Venetian and company are pretty solid across the board. I would say they possess intermediate playing abilities and advanced writing abilities. Timing seems to be spot on within the Psychedelic/Alternative rock grooves. The Venetian's voice is effective as he delivers many solid and passionate vocal performances that match this style of music perfectly. His guitar playing and solo work are spot on. The music melodic, dark, unpredictable, interesting, thought provoking and highly entertaining are just some of the words I would use to describe his music. Musical textures reminiscent of classic Queen, Alice Cooper and even Muse to Peter Murphy – anything thought provoking, progressive and passionate. If you like those kinds of artists you will no doubt get a kick out of this CD. The songs Above average songs. Very simple yet effective, conservative, highly original and passionate It strikes the prefect balance between a Rock Opera and Progressive Classic Rock. The Venetian and company are clearly just letting it all hang out as songwriters and performers and as a result this is what comes out of the other side. My favorite song on the CD is "Sometimes" The vibe Great vibe. Perfect for late night college parties, coffeehouses, or even magazine shops. Perfect for Rock Horror Picture Show type parties. The production delivers a lot of musical variety. Honorable mentions go out to amazing production virtuoso of The Venetian and company. I give him high marks for not being afraid to let it all hang out musically. The Venetian is not trying to be some popish artist striving for mass appeal – he’s just being himself. The CD refuses to try to hard – that’s what makes it so amazing The good Very entertaining and passionate record – amazing songs, dark, highly original. Possesses a very unique signature sound. The bad Marketability and Thick Italian Accent count against him. The ugly Nothing to report.
The verdict I Wanna Tell you a Story by The Venetian is a rock solid CD. The songwriting is clearly above average. The production gets it’s point across. Again the most amazing thing about this CD is The Ventian himself - clearly a marquee talent. Fans of Music set to a classic rock Opera format will tumble over this CD no doubt.
