The Verdict 4 out of 5

The Artist I recently checked out the latest CD from Los Angeles based 4 piece band Smalltime.

The band Pretty much standard 4 piece rock delivery. The playing abilities of Danny Van and his band are rock solid across the board. I would say they possess intermediate playing abilities & above average writing abilities. Timing seems to be spot on within the hard rock R&B grooves. Van's voice and playing work well & match the raw style of music perfectly. The music Loud, raw, but upbeat and positive. Musical textures reminiscent of Smithereens, George Thorogood, old school Steve Miller Band and even  Blues Traveler. Anything indie with a touch of hard rock and blues. Being a Christian Rock band of course the messages are to be expected and not underestimated. If you like those kinds of artists you will no doubt get a kick out of this CD. The songs Above average songs. Very simple yet effective, conservative, highly original, raw & powerful. It strikes the prefect balance between blues & rock with just a dash of hard rock. Van and company are clearly being himself as a songwriters and this is the end result. My favorite song on the CD is "Fish out of Water" The vibe Great vibe. Perfect for late night college parties, or coffeehouse hang outs. Honorable mentions go out to Dave & his band for not being afraid to let it all hang out musically. This CD has the personality of a 57 Chevy on steroids. Van and the rest of the band are not trying to be some popish artist striving for mass appeal. The CD refuses to try to hard Ė thatís what makes it so amazing The good Very likeable, marketable record Ė kind of like the artist. Amazing songs, fun to listen to. The bad Nothing to report. The ugly Nothing to report.

The verdict Smalltime is a rock solid and and EP period!. The songwriting is clearly above average. The production gets itís point across. Again  the most amazing thing about this CD is Danny Van and his band who let it all hang out not only with the music, but with the powerful lyrical content as well. .
