The Artist I recently checked out the latest 5 song EP from Hawaii's own Phil Jones entitled Raise Up released in 2012. More specifically Jones comes to us from the Island paradise of Kauai and according to his bio: Philís ultimate goal is to change the world into a better place, and he sees no better tool for this purpose than the power of song. Well said!

The band Jones plays guitar and sings and I might add he is no slouch on the fret board .Jones's band is rock solid across the board. I would say they possess above average to advanced playing and writing abilities. Timing is spot on within the indie-alternative rock, R&B grooves. Jones's vocal presence and guitar playing are spot on, as he delivers many solid vocal and guitar playing performances that match this style of music perfectly. I would say Jones definitely has star quality as he is clearly the focal point of this band. The music Upbeat, funny, interesting, thought provoking, zany, neurotic and at times funky. All in all great original music with a feel good vibe. Musical textures reminiscent of classic Red Hot Chili Peppers, Maroon 5, Robert Palmer and even Dire Straits Ė but with a surfer rock flair. Willr emind you of anything guitar driven and entertaining. If you like these kinds of artists you will get a kick out of Phil Jones. The songs Above average songs. Very simple yet effective, conservative, highly original, raw and powerful. It strikes the prefect balance between alternative rock, R&B and just a dash of surfer-funk. My favorite songs on the EP is probably the title track and "Perfect Wave." The vibe Great vibe. Perfect for late night college parties, coffeehouses, or even magazine shops. The messages are filled with hope and a passion for life itself. The production delivers a lot of musical variety with the 4 piece line-up. Honorable mentions go out to Jones himself for not being afraid to let it all hang out musically. Jones is not trying to be some popish artist striving for mass appeal Ė heís just being himself. Other positive aspects of the production include all the amazing messages. The CD refuses to try to hard Ė thatís what makes it so good The good Like the artist - very likeable, marketable, infectious with amazing subject matter. The bad Jones doesnít possess legendary vocal cords. His vocal phrasing and paraphrasing lacks creativity and is need of a melodic overhaul. At times it's choppy and erratic lacking fullness, melodic depth and variety. Itís almost like heís speaking or whispering the notes to you. Over time this repetitive scratchy baritone will take it's toll. The ugly Nothing to report.

The verdict Raise-up by Phil Jones is a rock solid EP. The songwriting and messages are above average. The production gets itís point across. Again  the most amazing thing about this CD is Jones's passionate messages of hope. Heís got the mojo and is an impressive composer. It's obvious to me why Phil Jones is so popular out west.  Fans of a carefree Alternative-College Rock, R&B, Surf-Funk should rightfully love everything about him.
