The Artist I recently checked out the latest CD from Massachusetts's own Flash Jack Eppington entitled Penny Up.

The band The playing abilities of Eppington & his session players is pretty solid across the board. I would say they possess average playing abilities & intermediate writing abilities. Timing seems to be a bit choppy in some spots within the indie-alternative rock grooves. Eppington's voice is effective as he delivers many solid vocal performances that match the indie style of music perfectly. The music Upbeat, raw, funny, quirky, rich in flavor, interesting, melodic, & highly entertaining. Musical textures reminiscent of Weezer, Talking Heads & Waxing Poetics anything indie. If you like those kinds of artists you will no doubt get a kick out of this CD. The songs Above average songs. Very simple yet effective, conservative, highly original, raw & powerful. It strikes the prefect balance between alternative & just a dash of punk. Eppington is clearly being himself as a songwriter & this is what comes out of the other end. My favorite song on the CD is Cellphone. The vibe Great vibe. Perfect for late night college parties, coffeehouses, or even magazine shops. The production delivers a raw musical variety. I give Eppington high marks for not being afraid to let it all hang out musically. Eppington is not trying to be some popish artist striving for mass appeal he is just being himself. The CD refuses to try to hard. The good Very likeable record with solid songs & just fun to listen to. The bad Once concern for me is the overall production quality of this CD. It almost sounds like it was recorded live in a studio. This was a practice done in the late 70's & earlier. As a result this CD fails to tread water in the deep end of the pool with other similar professional bands & their musical productions. The ugly Honestly it sounds like it was recorded in 1971.

The verdict Penny Up by Flash Jack Eppington is a rock solid CD. The songwriting is clearly above average. The production gets its point across. Again  the most amazing thing about this CD is Eppington himself on vocals & guitar. Fans of carefree Punk, Alternative-College Rock will love this CD no doubt.
