JUNE 2011

The Artist I recently checked out the sophomore release from the Assaf Kehati quartet  entitled Flowers & Other Stories released in 2011.  Assaf is based on the east coast (Boston) but have musical roots in Israel.

The band Quartet line up: Assaf Kehati (electric guitar) Alon Farber (saxophonist) Daniel Sapir (bassist) & drummer Udi Shlomo. Based on the bar set by the jazz standard I would say this band clearly possesses above average playing & above average writing abilities. You will find many impressive chops & eloquent playing styles presented along the way. Timing is spot on within the modern-day guitar driven Jazz pieces. Kehati holds his own remarkably well given his background. He is not to be underestimated in any way, shape of form. He deserves allot of credit for delivering an amazing musical personality yet with a unique musical signature that reflects his origin. He is a gifted player, composer & musical storyteller. The quartet is a perfect fit for him. The music possesses a very earthy mystique. Some pieces even cross the line into classical. All in all great music to eat a Sunday morning brunch to. Definitely classic jazz yet amazingly conservative. Music is timeless, very passionate & emotional. Will remind you of classic Frank Gambale, Wayne Krantz & of course elite players like Pat Metheny, Joe Pass, Larry Carlton & John McLaughlin come to mind. The songs Simply put - all songs are well rounded with amazing highs & powerful lows. There’s nothing like an earthy musical production to fill your sonic space,  this is definitely one of them. Simply put, very much like life itself this CD personifies life experience, with music that are 100% honest, pure & genuine. The production professional grade from start to finish with crystal clear recording quality. There's not many songs you can listen to time & time again. The good Overall & remarkably consistent, well rounded musical production. Honorable mentions go out to the gifted playing & writing abilities of Kehati & his quartet. The bad Nothing to report. The ugly Nothing to report.

The verdict Flowers & Other Stories by the Assaf Kehati quartet is an impressive collection of music. It shines with a rare brilliance comparable to a priceless gem. It clearly sets a standard within this truly amazing genre & the more you listen to it, the more it will reveal itself to you. Folks who want a colorful Contemporary Jazz sound to fill their air will love this release. If you are a fine restaurant, Art Shop or Coffee Shop owner - trust me when I say you want this CD in your hands. It's quite marketable in that respect as well. Just hit play & see where this musical journey takes you. The Bottom Line This CD is comparable to a fine bottle of wine. Every now & then it's an absolute pleasure.
